@arendsigwines Every time I go, I’m impressed all over again in so many ways.

I went back last month, on a calm winter day, for a site inspection with @livebiggerexperiences so they could feel for themselves the kind of immersion that’s possible at Arendsig. She loved it. Of course she did.

Lourens is 5th generation on this land, the first to make his own wine from it, single vineyard so what’s in your glass is that exact piece of soil, that slope, that sun...

Facing the mountains, learning as you go, savouring and really appreciating the wine that way that’s not something you have to manufacture and call an “experience.” It already is one. He put braaibroodjies on the fire, a couple of chopies with sweet potatoes and a salad, and just talked. Time stops. You realise it’s not “effort” to him. It’s who he is, on land his family has farmed for generations. Lizelle runs the weddings, the functions, the cottages and probably much more. It’s theirs, together, and it shows.

Nothing about it is performed. It’s real. And the wine genuinely, incredibly good.

Farming. Legacy. Hospitality. At Arendsig it’s not separate things they do. It’s just who they are.

Yesterday morning, driving along the R317 as the sun was rising again, the silence was heavy. The kind of silence that comes after chaos. Still. Sober. And my heart just... ached.
For every person in our valley and across the Western Cape who has been affected, closely or not. For what it takes to stand back up again. For homes shaken, lives disrupted, and for Nature herself ; the rivers, the trees, the fish, all the beings who have no voice in this.

Vulnerability, fear, chaos. We have all felt some version of it these past days.
And yet here comes the sun again.

Nature is the Mother. She humbles us. She reminds us that we are small, and that we are connected to the land, to each other, to something much larger than ourselves.

Let’s be gentle with one another right now. Check on your neighbours. Give what you can. Our area needs support, and it needs love.

And in the midst of it all GRATITUDE. For what we have. For dry floors and warm beds and the people beside us. 🙏

Leaving Paris today. So grateful for the time I had in my native country (French flag). With family, with friends. Remembering. Sharing. Pausing. Laughing. Crying. Eating. Being.

Coming back to France always moves me. It confirms how far I am. The choice I made. It forces a kind of introspection you can’t avoid. It fills me with gratitude for the people here, and for the life I have chosen there.

A little sad to leave the ones I love. And genuinely happy to go back to what I proudly also call home. South Africa. and Robertson for now.

I won’t pretend Robertson has the food of France ( food is our culture, our religion, and that’s just the truth:) hahah . But the slowness? The seasons? The farmers and their pride? The beautiful Nature? The authenticity? The realness? That what Robertson also has. Deeply.

Through @robertsontourism I stumbled onto this gem as a surprise visit to a family-run olive farm tucked along the Breede River, below the Rooiberg mountain.

Welcome to @Riverbend Olives Farm. Alison and her husband Francis have been running this magical estate since 2014, carrying forward the legacy her parents built. The olive mill sits right in the heart of the groves pressing fruit within 24 hours of hand-picking. That’s not a detail. That’s a philosophy.

What struck me most? Alison runs everything herself, alongside her staff, with a level of professionalism and passion that is rare. She is a rock of a woman.

And she’s opened her mill to smaller surrounding farms pressing oil for others in the true Italian co-operative spirit.
